Basic Life Support · the healthcare level of CPR
CPR-BLS certification in Barrie
The course to book
CPR & AED at the BLS level
$73 + HST
CPR & AED is $73 + HST: 2 hours online, then 2 hours in class at our Barrie centre. The certificate is valid 1 year.
CPR-BLS is Basic Life Support, the level of CPR written for healthcare. It covers everything in CPR-C, which is adults, children and infants, and adds using a bag valve mask and performing CPR on someone who has been intubated by a professional.
It is the level for paramedics, doctors, nurses, dental hygienists, chiropractors and anyone working in a medical office, and most post-secondary students need it before a clinical placement.
You do not pay more for it here. CPR-A, CPR-C and CPR-BLS are the same price on the same course, and you choose your level when you book.
Before you book: do you also need first aid?
This is the question that decides which course you book. BLS is offered on three of our courses, not one, so it is easy to book the wrong one.
No, CPR-BLS only
Book CPR & AED and choose BLS: $73 + HST, 2 hours online and 2 hours in class. This is what Dental Colleges ask for, and what you want when your first aid is still valid and only your CPR-BLS needs renewing.
See dates below →Yes, first aid as well
Book Intermediate First Aid & CPR and choose BLS as your CPR level at checkout: $138 + HST, 9 hours online and 7.5 hours in class. You do not need to buy a separate BLS course on top.
See Intermediate First Aid →Renewing a first aid certificate
If your Intermediate certificate is still valid, recertification is the shorter route, and you can choose BLS on it too.
How recertification works →Not sure
Read the wording your program, College or employer gave you, or call us on 705-985-3478 and we will read it with you. That is most of what we do on the phone. If you cannot find out, book Intermediate First Aid & CPR with CPR-BLS. Intermediate covers Basic First Aid, BLS covers CPR-C and CPR-A, and a CPR level can be moved down in class, but not up.

Who asks for CPR-BLS
The requirement is set by your program, College or employer, so check yours. These are the ones we are asked about most, and each has its own page setting out where the requirement comes from.
- Dental practices
- CPR & AED at the BLS level

- Georgian College Personal Support Worker (PSW)
- Intermediate First Aid + CPR-BLS
- Georgian College Paramedic

Notice the split. Most health programs ask for first aid with BLS, and dental asks for CPR-BLS on its own. Booking the wrong one costs you a day.
Choosing BLS on a first aid course
Choosing CPR-BLS on a first aid course issues two certificates: a CPR-BLS certificate that renews every year, and your first aid certificate, valid 3 years, which shows CPR level C.
A standalone CPR & AED certificate is valid 1 year, not 3 years. Either way, the BLS certificate is the one you renew every year. Taken on its own, CPR & AED issues one certificate. The second one exists only when BLS is taken together with first aid.
CPR-BLS: common questions
Is CPR-BLS the same as CPR-C?
No. CPR-C covers adults, children and infants. CPR-BLS covers everything in CPR-C and adds using a bag valve mask and performing CPR on someone who has been intubated by a professional. If your requirement names BLS, book BLS.
My paperwork says HCP or BCLS. Is that BLS?
BLS stands for Basic Life Support and is the healthcare-provider level of CPR. Requirements are worded differently from one College, program and employer to the next, so if yours says CPR-HCP or BCLS, check with whoever set it, or call us on 705-985-3478 and we will read it with you before you book.
Is this a Heart & Stroke BLS course?
No. Our CPR-BLS certificate is issued by Assured Response, a WSIB-approved training provider, not by the Heart and Stroke Foundation. If your program, College or employer names Heart & Stroke specifically, check with them before you book.
Do I need first aid as well as BLS?
Not necessarily. Dental Colleges ask for CPR at the BLS level, not a first aid certificate, and dental staff are frequently sold a first aid course they were never asked for. But if your program asks for first aid with BLS, or your workplace needs a designated first aider under Regulation 1101, that is a first aid certificate, and CPR alone will not cover it. In that case book Intermediate First Aid & CPR and choose BLS as your CPR level.
Is the BLS course hands-on, or can I do it online?
Hands-on. The theory is completed online at home, then you come to our Barrie centre for the in-person skills session, where you practise and are assessed on a manikin. That matters if your College does not accept online-only CPR. The College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario, for one, does not.
How long is a BLS certificate valid, and how do I renew it?
A standalone CPR & AED certificate is valid 1 year, so BLS is renewed every year. To renew, book CPR & AED at the BLS level again: $73 + HST, 2 hours online and 2 hours in class.
Is there a BLS recertification or CPR recertification course?
Not as a separate course. A CPR-BLS certificate renews every year, and so does any CPR certificate held on its own. You renew it by taking CPR & AED again at the level you need, and that is what people usually mean by BLS recertification or CPR recertification. First aid recertification is a different thing: it renews an Intermediate First Aid certificate. See how recertification works.
I chose BLS on a first aid course. Why are there two certificates?
Choosing CPR-BLS on a first aid course issues two certificates: a CPR-BLS certificate that renews every year, and your first aid certificate, valid 3 years, which shows CPR level C.
Can I take BLS with Basic First Aid?
No. Basic First Aid offers CPR-A or CPR-C. If you need BLS, take Intermediate First Aid & CPR, the standalone CPR & AED course, or Recertification.
Does CPR-BLS cost more than CPR-C?
Not here. All three CPR levels are the same price on the same course, which is not true of every provider. So if you are not sure which level you need, choose BLS: you can move down a level in class, but not up.
