First aid & CPR for Georgian PSW
The certification you need
Intermediate First Aid + CPR-BLS
Choose the BLS level of CPR at checkout.
Georgian's Personal Support Worker (PSW) program requires Intermediate First Aid with CPR at the BLS level. PSW placements happen in long-term care and home-care settings, where the healthcare-provider BLS level of CPR is expected, and CPR-A or CPR-C will not meet it.
It is one blended course at Barrie First Aid: 9 hours online at your own pace, then a 7.5-hour in-class day minutes from campus. Pick BLS as your CPR level when you book, and you are certified before your placement starts.

- Get certified before your placement start date. Long-term care and home-care sites check it before you begin.
- Intermediate First Aid is valid 3 years, but the CPR-BLS certificate is valid for one year and is renewed every year; a CPR-only renewal (our $73 CPR & AED at BLS) covers the in-between years.
- You keep your certification current through Synergy Gateway to hold a valid clinical permit for placements.
- Once you are working, employers vary: most ask for Intermediate First Aid with BLS, some accept CPR-C, and a few ask only for Basic First Aid. The certificate the program requires covers all of them.
In a similar program at another Ontario college, university or private college? The requirement is usually the same. Confirm your own program’s wording, then book the same course.
Requirements can change and vary by intake, so always confirm with your Georgian program before booking. Not sure? Call us at 705-985-3478 or send us a message.

Personal Support Worker (PSW): common questions
Which CPR level do I need for the Georgian PSW program?
CPR-BLS (Basic Life Support), paired with Intermediate First Aid. When you register for the Intermediate First Aid & CPR course, choose BLS at checkout, not A or C.
I already hold Intermediate First Aid. Do I retake the whole course?
If your Intermediate First Aid is still within its 3 years, you only need to renew CPR-BLS. The CPR-BLS certificate is valid for one year, and the standalone CPR & AED (BLS) course ($73 + HST) renews it.
How long is my certification valid?
Intermediate First Aid is valid 3 years. CPR-BLS is valid 1 year, so you renew it every year to keep your placement eligibility and clinical permit current.
When should I book so I'm ready for placement?
Book early enough to finish the online theory and attend your in-class day before your placement start date. If you're unsure of timing, call us and we'll help you pick a date.
