The level for more than five on a shift
Intermediate First Aid & CPR in Barrie
The short version
The higher workplace first aid level, with CPR included
$138 + HST
Intermediate First Aid & CPR is $138 + HST: 9 hours online, then 7.5 hours in class at our Barrie centre. The first aid certificate is valid 3 years; choose CPR-BLS and its certificate renews every year.
Intermediate First Aid & CPR is the higher of the two workplace first aid levels. The WSIB adopted the current course names on 22 June 2026 under CSA Z1210:24. Regulation 1101 was written before that, which is why your employer's paperwork may use an older name. It is the same level and the same certificate.
It covers the full range of first aid plus CPR and AED, and it is our most-booked course.
Your CPR level is included. Choose CPR-A, CPR-C or CPR-BLS at checkout, all at the same price. You do not need to book a separate CPR or BLS course.
Requirements vary by employer, program and role, so confirm what yours asks for before booking. Not sure? Call us at 705-985-3478 or send us a message, and we’ll work it out with you.

Who asks for Intermediate First Aid
The requirement comes from a regulation, a program or an employer, depending on the work. Each of these has its own page setting out where it comes from.
- Workplaces (Regulation 1101)
- Depends on workers per shift: Basic at five or fewer, Intermediate above that
- Childcare & early years
- Intermediate First Aid + CPR-C (infant & child)
- Teachers & school staff
- Intermediate First Aid + CPR-C, where your board or activity asks for it
- Long-term care & PSWs
- Intermediate First Aid + CPR-BLS, what most employers ask for
- Georgian College Practical Nursing
- Intermediate First Aid + CPR-BLS
- Georgian College Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
- Intermediate First Aid + CPR-BLS
- Georgian College Personal Support Worker (PSW)
- Intermediate First Aid + CPR-BLS
- Georgian College Paramedic
- Intermediate First Aid + CPR-BLS
Intermediate covers Basic First Aid as well, and not the other way round. If nobody has told you which level you need, Intermediate leaves you covered.
If Intermediate is not the right fit
Five or fewer workers on a shift
Regulation 1101 sets the Basic level for a shift of five or fewer. Basic First Aid & CPR is $99 + HST, 3 hours online and 4 hours in class.
See Basic First Aid →You only need CPR or BLS
If you were asked for CPR on its own, or your first aid certificate is still valid and your CPR-BLS is due, CPR & AED is $73 + HST.
CPR-BLS and CPR on its own →You are renewing
If your Intermediate certificate is still valid, recertification is the shorter route, once per certificate.
Check you are eligible →Choosing BLS on this course
Choosing CPR-BLS on a first aid course issues two certificates: a CPR-BLS certificate that renews every year, and your first aid certificate, valid 3 years, which shows CPR level C.
The BLS certificate is the one you renew each year, with CPR & AED. Choose CPR-A or CPR-C instead and it is shown on your first aid certificate, with nothing to renew until that certificate expires.
Intermediate First Aid: common questions
My paperwork uses an older course name. Is Intermediate First Aid the right one?
If it names the higher of the two workplace levels, yes. The WSIB adopted the name Intermediate First Aid on 22 June 2026 under CSA Z1210:24. It is the same level and the same certificate, and it satisfies a requirement written under the earlier name. If you are not sure which level your paperwork means, call us and we will read it with you.
What is the difference between Intermediate and Basic First Aid?
For a workplace, Regulation 1101 sets it by how many workers are on a shift. More than five on a shift means Intermediate. Five or fewer means Basic. The threshold is more than five, so at exactly five, Basic is enough. Intermediate covers Basic, and not the other way round, so if nobody has told you which you need, Intermediate leaves you covered.
Which CPR level do I pick?
Regulation 1101 does not set one. The WSIB accepts CPR-A, B, C or Healthcare Provider as the CPR component, so it is your employer's call. CPR-C covers adult, child and infant and is the common choice. Healthcare and clinical placements usually specify BLS. All three cost the same with us. If you are not sure, choose BLS: you can move down a level in class, but not up.
Is CPR included, or do I book it separately?
It is included. You choose CPR-A, CPR-C or CPR-BLS at checkout, at the same price, and you do not need a separate CPR or BLS course. Choosing CPR-BLS on a first aid course issues two certificates: a CPR-BLS certificate that renews every year, and your first aid certificate, valid 3 years, which shows CPR level C.
Can I do Intermediate First Aid online?
Partly. Intermediate First Aid & CPR is 9 hours of theory online at home, then 7.5 hours in class at our Barrie centre. The in-class part cannot be replaced: CSA Z1210:24 clause 4.3 sets a minimum number of hands-on practical hours that a fully online course cannot contain.
Do I really have to do the online part first?
Yes. It must be finished before your in-class day and cannot be done on the day. Your access is emailed the moment you book.
How long is the certificate valid, and how do I renew it?
The first aid certificate is valid 3 years. While it is still valid you can renew it with recertification, a shorter course, once per certificate. After it has expired it is the full course again.
