Common questions

First aid & CPR course questions we get asked every week

If your question isn’t here, call us on 705-985-3478 during office hours. A person will answer and help you sort it out. Or send us a message and we’ll reply by email.

Choosing the right course

Which first aid course do I need?

For a workplace, Regulation 1101 sets the level by how many workers are on a shift: more than five means Intermediate First Aid & CPR ($138 + HST), and five or fewer means Basic First Aid & CPR ($99 + HST). Ontario security guard licensing also requires Basic. If your first aid certificate is still valid and only your CPR-BLS needs renewing, or you were asked for CPR on its own, take CPR & AED ($73 + HST). Healthcare and college programs vary, so check your program page or call us. Always confirm the requirement with your employer, school or program before booking.

My employer’s paperwork uses an older course name. What do I book?

In most cases, Intermediate First Aid & CPR. The WSIB adopted the current course names on 22 June 2026 under CSA Z1210:24: Basic First Aid is the level for a shift of five or fewer workers, and Intermediate First Aid is the level for more than five. It’s the same training under a new name, so a requirement written the old way is met by the current course at the same level. If you can’t tell which level yours means, call us and we’ll read it with you.

What is the difference between CPR-A, CPR-C and CPR-BLS?

CPR-A covers adult CPR and AED use. CPR-C covers adult, child and infant. It’s the most commonly requested level, and what childcare, education and most general workplaces ask for. CPR-BLS is Basic Life Support, the healthcare-provider level required by most nursing, paramedic, dental and clinical placement programs. You choose your level when you book. See CPR-BLS in Barrie for who needs it and which course to book.

I’m a Georgian College student. Which one applies to me?

It depends on your program. Our Georgian College page lists the exact certification for the programs that require one. Nursing and paramedic programs are usually Intermediate First Aid + CPR-BLS, dental programs usually need CPR-BLS only, and most non-clinical programs need Intermediate First Aid + CPR-C. Always confirm against your own program materials.

Do you run infant or baby CPR classes?

Yes, within CPR & AED. Choose CPR-C when you book: it covers CPR and choking for adults, children and infants. $73 + HST, 2 hours online at home, then 2 hours in class at our Barrie centre.

The online portion

Do I really have to do the online part before class?

Yes. Every course is blended: the theory is completed online at home at your own pace, and it must be finished before your in-class day. You can’t complete it on the day. Your online access is emailed to you the moment you book.

How long does the online portion take?

About 9 hours for Intermediate First Aid & CPR, about 3 hours for Basic First Aid & CPR, and about 2 hours for CPR & AED. You work through it at your own pace and can stop and start as often as you like.

How long is the whole course?

Each course has two parts, online at home and then in class with us. Intermediate First Aid & CPR is 9 hours online and 7.5 hours in class. Basic First Aid & CPR is 3 hours online and 4 hours in class. CPR & AED is 2 hours online and 2 hours in class. Recertification is 3 hours online and 5 hours in class.

What if I don’t finish the online part in time?

You won’t be able to complete the course on that date. Email info@barriefirstaidtraining.com as early as you can to ask about moving it. A date change has to be requested by email, and a phone call does not count as notice. The sooner we know, the more options there are.

Can I take a first aid or CPR course fully online?

Not with us. Every course here is blended: the theory is online at home, then the hands-on part is in class at our Barrie centre. The CPR levels guide explains what an online-only certificate does and does not cover.

Your class day

What should I wear and bring?

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, because you’ll be kneeling on the floor to practise chest compressions. Bring valid photo ID and indoor shoes or socks: you need both to take part. Check your booking confirmation email for your start time; it varies by course and date.

Where are you, and is there parking?

We’re at 4 Alliance Blvd, Unit 7, Barrie, ON L4M 5J1, in northeast Barrie, minutes from Georgian College. Parking is free and right outside the door: no meters, no permits. Directions and a map are on the contact page.

What are your office hours?

Every day, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Note that course days are not office hours. Classes run on the dates shown in the booking calendar, including times outside those hours.

Your certification

How long is my certification valid?

Three years from the date you complete the course, for Intermediate First Aid & CPR, Basic First Aid & CPR and Recertification. The standalone CPR & AED certificate is valid one year. If you take CPR-BLS alongside a first aid course you receive two certificates: the CPR-BLS renews every year, and your first aid certificate is valid three years and shows CPR level C.

Who issues the certificate, and is it WSIB-approved?

Barrie First Aid & CPR Training is an authorized Assured Response provider. Your certificate is issued by Assured Response, a WSIB-approved training provider, and first aid course content meets CSA Z1210:24. You can look up any of our instructors by name or instructor ID on the Assured Response public instructor registry. The About page sets out how the certification works.

Can I recertify if I trained somewhere else?

Yes. Recertification is open to anyone holding a currently valid Intermediate First Aid certificate from any WSIB-approved training provider, so you’re not tied to the provider you first trained with. CPR on its own is renewed by taking CPR & AED again. See how recertification works and who is eligible.

How many times can I recertify?

Once per certificate, and then it cycles. Full certification, one recertification three years later, then a full certification again, then a recertification, and so on for as long as you keep it current. So if you recertified last time round, this time it’s the full course. Tell us where you are in the cycle when you book and we’ll make sure you’re in the right class.

My certificate has already expired. Can I still recertify?

No. Recertification requires a certificate that hasn’t expired yet. If yours has lapsed you’ll need to take the full course again. Not sure whether yours still qualifies? Call us on 705-985-3478 and we’ll check it with you.

When do I get my certificate?

Your certificate is issued once you’ve completed the online portion and successfully demonstrated the required skills on your in-class day.

It reaches you the same day or the next business day. Certificates are issued by Assured Response, a WSIB-approved training provider, and they carry your full legal name as shown on the photo ID you bring to class, which is why the ID is not optional.

Booking & payment

How do I book?

Pick a date on the booking calendar, choose your CPR level, and pay online. Your spot is held straight away and your online theory access is emailed to you immediately. If you’d rather book over the phone, call us during office hours.

How do I pay?

By card online at the time you book. Group bookings are invoiced instead, with one invoice for the whole group.

Can I change or cancel my booking?

Yes, with notice, and the amount you get back depends on timing and on how much of the online training you have used.

  • More than 7 days before your class, you can cancel or move it. If you have not booked an in-person date yet, refunds run 100%, 90% or 50% depending on whether you have started or finished the online part, less a $5 processing fee.
  • Within 7 days of your class there are no refunds, and no date changes or transfers. Public classes have limited seats and a late drop cannot be refilled.
  • For illness or an emergency, tell us at least 48 hours before the start time and we will look at it case by case. Under 48 hours there is no refund and you would pay to rebook.
  • A no-show gets no refund.

Every request has to be by email, to info@barriefirstaidtraining.com. A phone call or a text is not official notice. The full detail, including late-request review times, is on our course policies page.

Do you train groups or come to workplaces?

Yes. We’ll run the training at your site or host your group at our Barrie centre. Group pricing starts at six people, and a smaller group is welcome at that rate. Pricing is quoted per booking based on the course, headcount and location, and you get a single invoice. The group training page has the details.

Still not sure?

Answer one question and we’ll show you the course that fits, what it costs, and the next dates you can actually book. Or just call us. It usually takes a minute.
