How long each certificate lasts

The certificates you earn on our courses are issued by Assured Response. How long one lasts depends on what it is.

  • Intermediate First Aid & CPR: valid 3 years.
  • Basic First Aid & CPR: valid 3 years.
  • CPR & AED taken on its own: valid 1 year, at every level.
  • CPR-BLS chosen on a first aid course: you receive two certificates. The CPR-BLS certificate renews every year. The first aid certificate is valid 3 years and shows CPR level C.
  • CPR-A or CPR-C chosen on a first aid course: shown on the first aid certificate, and it lasts as long as that certificate does.

The time runs from the date you complete the course.

Renewing CPR

A CPR certificate held on its own is renewed by taking CPR & AED again at the level you need. People often call that CPR recertification or BLS recertification, although it is the same course. CPR & AED is 2 hours online, then 2 hours in class, for $73 + HST.

If you chose CPR-BLS on a first aid course, the CPR-BLS certificate is the one that comes due every year. CPR-BLS in Barrie explains who needs it and how renewal works.

Renewing first aid: recertification

An Intermediate First Aid certificate is renewed by Recertification, a shorter course: 3 hours online, then 5 hours in class, for $99 + HST. The full Intermediate First Aid & CPR course is 9 hours online and 7.5 hours in class, for $138 + HST.

Three conditions apply.

  • Your certificate has to be still valid on the day of the class.
  • It can come from any WSIB-approved training provider, so you are not tied to whoever trained you first.
  • Recertification can be used once per certificate. It alternates with a full course: full certification, one recertification 3 years later, then a full certification again.

If your certificate has already expired

Recertification requires a certificate that has not expired yet. If yours has lapsed, you need the full course again. That condition is set by the program, not by us.
