Why is CPR Certification so important for people who work in restaurants?

The Food Service industry brings unique environmental challenges, and the likelihood of a medical emergency in a restaurant is higher than in the average workplace.

  1. Anaphylactic Shock (Serve Allergic Reaction)

Food allergies may lead to breathing emergencies.  Use of an EPI-pen might be required.  Restaurant workers must be prepared to recognize and respond to these types of medical emergencies.

  2. Choking Emergencies

You see it in Hollywood movies all the time - a customer orders a juicy red steak, only to begin choking on it a few minutes later.  A heroic restaurant worker performs the "Heimlich maneuver," and a bystander shouts "SOMEBODY CALL 911!"  Food service employees must understand how to take rapid and appropriate action in the event a person begins choking.

  3. Heart Attacks, Strokes, Asthma Emergencies

Many people with a wide variety of backgrounds all come together in restaurants.  Young, old, middle aged.  Some healthy, some not so healthy, and some downright in poor medical condition.  A restaurant can reduce its liability and ensure its customers safety when its employees are trained in first aid and CPR.  Food service employees trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, and asthma can literally "save the day" and "save a life."

  4. Burns, Slip-and-Fall, General Injuries

Let's not forget the "back-of-house" staff that help make the restaurant successful behind the scenes.  They have a higher risk exposure to being burned by hot surfaces, possibly even direct source fire.  They risk slipping and falling on wet floors or on items accidentally dropped on the floor.  Internal restaurant employees, such as cooks, bussers, prep chefs, should be able to take care of each other and have each others backs in the event one of their teammates becomes injured.
